I recently tried using Procreate’s animation feature. After having and using Procreate for over a year now, I never knew this feature existed. I’ve been fascinated by traditional animation for a long time now, mainly because I have an infinite amount of respect for those who draw the frame of my favorite anime and movies. Nowadays, animation has become modernized into utilizing CGI technologies and whatnot, but traditional animators still practice their craft, particularly in Asian media and children’s cartoons in the West. To draw a frame to cause the progression of every single movement is extremely painstaking, but leads to a beautiful end-result. In order to test this out, I used Procreate’s “animation assist” feature, which overlays layers in order to draw over and adjust in the desired way. I made a few layers, and in the end, managed to successfully make a blinking eye. A…kind of lopsided blinking eye, hehe…Though, it did flow correctly, and I was happy with the result of going in completely blind. I used a total of ten frames, but, in short, a blinking eye should only take five. The experiment itself was a really fun challenge to try out something new, and I highly recommend fellow artists to try so! It can be frustrating, especially when you draw on the wrong layer (*insert screeching noises*), but challenges such as these, in my opinion, are important for your own personal growth! I’ve even found myself watching episodes of my favorite shows through an animator’s lens, and am still in such awe at how flawlessly movements are triggered.
